Let’s face it: I know that figuring out brand identity is tricky. It’s that never-ending task of juggling key characteristics, values, and tone of writing to “fit in” to that box you set up for yourself. While it can help you have a formalized identity, you can take that step further. Sometimes thinking outside of the box and making references to existing characters can be the perfect exercise to get unstuck!
“I’m trying very hard not to connect with people right now.”
Does this sound like you right now? Because you sure sound like David Rose from Schitt’s Creek!
Do you have it all together but also scared of human connection like David? Are you mega girlie with a little touch of ditsy like Alexis? Or maybe you align more with another character from the greatest TV-Show of all time, Schitt’s Creek? Which one best represents your brand? We all might give the illusion on the ‘gram, but there is no way we have it all together. Not even close! I know I certainly don’t! I am not ashamed of that. Owning your schitt can help you from going downhill, something Roland must’ve been thinking when he elected himself as mayor.
Let’s go through it together – and see which character you share the most common values with!
Remember, and repeat after me! “Owning your schitt can help you from going downhill!”
You are totally a high-end bitch. You have davidisms – those totally unfiltered opinions. While you may be out of touch with reality (slightly), your quick wit makes up for it. You totally love to shame eat – as long as it is inside and climate controlled! You are the one to get pissy when your birthday is forgotten or if the party planning is not going your way. Even though you might struggle with imposter syndrome, you are open to trying out validating your ideas with others that might be outside of your comfort zone.
You are a ditzy, high-end lover with a touch of danger. Totally girly. You also have experience living in the real world. Often says “Ew, David!” and likes to boop people on the nose. Alexis’ personal brand identity consists of a mix of “ew” and 💰. You may need a reality check in order to keep yourself in line. To do this, you might want to take a step back from your project + assess if it is heading in the right direction. Ask yourself if you feel comfortable in the way that things are going and if there are any adjustments that you want to make.
Alexis is kinda me! 🙋 She seems like a mess but actually has it all together secretly in their business but literally nowhere else in her life. And always goes through life wearing really cute outfits.
She’s my spirit animal > “I’m just super tired from walking, though!”
If you are like this character then you have an amazing collection of accessories (business tools) and have a impressive library of vocab words in your repertoire. You also are 1000% oblivious to others around you, except when they are a big star. You are loveable + focus on *you* above all. Which isn’t necessarily always a bad thing but it can be! To get out of this mindset, you have to check your limiting beliefs that are locking you out of being mindful of what is going on around you. Challenge yourself to think thoughts that you would otherwise ignore. Instead of placing dread in this new area, focus on making a mental note of a change you wish to make and outline achievable steps to make it happen.
You are 100% old-school. Like an old dog, you can learn new tricks when it’s absolutely necessary. You enjoy supporting others and seeing their success in turn. “Tweet us on Facebook!” is your idea of creating a stronger brand identity and presence online. To work on this, you should consider working with a pro in developing a more meaningful brand! (Pssst… I know someone who can help you get your brand identity + website together, pronto!)
You are just starting out in your journey. It might feel confusing, but you have it *mostly* together! You have a rough road map of what is ahead of you but might be struggling on how to get from point A to point B. You have to sprinkle in some sarcasm to every conversation. 100% the type to end your emails with “Best wishes & warmest regards.” Working with your witty observations or insults can work in your favor when providing personal criticism. While the feedback might not be perfect, it is perfect.
“You’re my Mariah Carey.” You are that totally supportive partner. No matter what others are up to, you will keep pushing! You are there to help the people in your personal and business life succeed + thrive in their roles. Literally everyone needs a Patrick in their life for unwavering love and support. If you are a Patrick, you might be experiencing burn out! You need to remember to take more time for yourself, too! Remembering what is important to you at the end of the day will allow you to help others in turn when your batteries are fully recharged.
You have trouble saying one word: no. You just can NOT turn anyone down that asks. In turn, you can not resist a good deal! Remember that when you purchase something, regardless if it is for yourself or your biz – there has to be a meaningful purpose behind it! Will it spark joy? Will it help you work more efficiently? Ensure that there is value behind your new purchase ahead of time. And remember to always practice setting boundaries!
You’re who we all secretly wish we could be. As a result of modesty, you are secretly a millionaire! You do what you love for fun and to help others above all else. Not because you need a paycheck, because you truly enjoy it. You are doing your hearts work. Usually always a beacon of light and encouragement but sometimes – you shout out jarring punches of random negativity and existential dread. Feedback is always fantastic; however, ensure that you remember at the end of the day to keep it constructive! This will help both you and others around you grow.
You are a little rough around the edges but also still really loveable once people get to know you. You hate new ideas at first, but you come around. Even though you are there to help anyone who needs it, you will also steal a bite of their muffin. Be mindful of that unsolicited advice that you share with others and remember to have a little bit of a filter when needed. Reframe those thoughts to help others improve where they are at + don’t guilt trip them! Kill them with kindness.
You’re new to the game – but handling it like a champ! Jocelyn might be a new mom, but she is a seasoned educator and knows she will be okay in the end. You might have a hectic morning – yet you can keep it all together. Remember to plan ahead when you can and expect the unexpected. Just like in your personal life, business can get messy!
It can be difficult to figure out your brand identity – I know it was for me, too! If you can walk away with one piece of information in your head after completing this exercise: you should be able to connect yourself to a fictional personality by identifying both your strengths and weaknesses. By completing this, you are able to gain a better understanding of yourself and where you need to improve in the future.
None of us are perfect, just like all of these characters! Yet, we have the ability to work on that within ourselves and grow. And be loved by so many.
So… who are you? I want to know!
